Top palliative care expert becomes a subject in her own research after husband’s terminal cancer diagnosis

Dr Andrea Grindrod wrote a social prescription for herself.

When Dr Andrea Grindrod (PhD) learnt her husband Greg had terminal cancer, she knew the data showed her own future would be difficult.

“Poor mental health, poor physical health, social health, emotional wellbeing — it’s really not looking good for the cohort of carers, who still have to live after their loved one has died,” Dr Grindrod said.

“I’m at risk of being socially isolated if I don’t stay connected. I’m at risk of anxiety and/or depression in my grief.”

So, the director of the public health palliative care program at La Trobe University in Victoria decided to become a subject in her own tests.
