Both procedures resulted in improvements in walking scores, but neither was superior, authors say

For patients with end-stage ankle osteoarthritis, total ankle replacement and ankle fusion have similar clinical scores and harms, according to UK findings.

Researchers from the University College London conducted a randomised trial to compare total ankle replacement to ankle fusion among patients with end-stage ankle osteoarthritis, aged 50-85.

The primary outcome was change in Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire walking/standing (MOXFQ-W/S) domain scores from baseline to 52 weeks after surgery.

In the Annals of Internal Medicine study, 303 patients were randomly assigned between March 2015 and January 2019; clinical scores were analysed for 281 participants.
