Town reinstates GP after woman’s death

Western NSW Local Health District is committed to having doctors onsite whenever possible, says Dr Shannon Nott, director of Rural Health and Medical Services

A rural NSW town where a woman died at a hospital with no doctor present is soon to welcome back its VMO after months of negotiations.

Gulgong, in the state’s central west, had been without a doctor for at least two months when Dawn Trevitt, 66, was taken by ambulance to the town’s Multi Purpose Service (MPS) in mid-September.

Ms Trevitt was treated by nurses on site and a doctor through telehealth, but she died from a gastrointestinal rupture.

Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) had failed to renew the VMO Dr Nebras Yahya’s contract at the service in June.
