Training for GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD not good enough, top paediatrician warns

The state-based training for GPs to diagnose and manage ADHD needs reform, with some programs putting too much emphasis on pharmacological treatment, a top paediatrician warns.
Since 2023, most states and territories have given GPs greater powers to diagnose and treat ADHD, although the scope and training requirements vary.
In SA, for example, GPs must complete two online modules and one in-person workshop to diagnose patients aged eight and over, while Queensland has no mandatory training.
Dr Niroshini Kennedy told AusDoc that the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) was worried about the depth and structure of the state training programs, as well as the inconsistency.
