Transgender adults ‘vulnerable to premature death’

Researchers have tracked morbidity and mortality trends across 50 years of gender-affirming hormonal therapy

Transgender men and women have double the risk of premature death compared with adults in the general population, a major study shows.

The retrospective analysis of data from 4600 transgender patients in the Netherlands, spanning nearly 50 years, suggests premature mortality is particularly high among transgender women, researchers say.

They stressed, however, that most of these deaths were unrelated to gender-affirming hormone therapy and were primarily driven by high rates of HIV-related deaths or suicide.

“Monitoring, optimising and, if necessary, treating comorbidities … remain important in transgender healthcare,” wrote the team from the Amsterdam University Medical Centre.
