Transplant patient dies after contracting SARS-CoV-2 from donor lungs: US

The donor's initial PCR test was negative but samples from her lower respiratory tract later confirmed she was infected

Doctors are reporting what is believed to be the first confirmed case in the US of COVID-19 transmission via an organ transplant.

The University of Michigan team say the patient developed COVID-19 after receiving lungs from a donor who had returned a negative nasopharyngeal PCR test.

The donor was tested within 48 hours of being admitted to hospital with severe head injuries sustained in a car accident.

Her family confirmed she had no recent history of travel or fever, cough, headache or diarrhoea.
