Tribunal fines doctor $10,000 for writing fake sick notes for person on bail

The case was a warning to other young doctors, the tribunal panel said.

A doctor has been fined $10,000 for writing five false medical certificates for an acquaintance who had failed to attend a police station in line with their bail conditions.

The 31-year-old doctor’s name was suppressed by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

But in a brief judgement published last month, it said the doctor “knew the medical certificates were to be used to justify a person’s non-attendance at a police station, which was a condition of his bail”.

“In that way, it can be seen that the breach here involved something akin to an attempt to pervert the course of justice — a much more serious matter than the issue of a certificate relating to claiming wages [for a sick day].
