University and 120 GP practices back doctor’s new med school dream

Professor Stephen Tobin says his new medical school will have a heavy online, general practice-first focus.

The architect of a GP-focused medical school says at least 120 GP practices have agreed to back his plan and host student placements.

Surgeon Professor Stephen Tobin says he hopes to launch his new medical school in 2027, provided it is approved by the medical council.

Back in 2024, the former RACS dean of education told AusDoc of his ambitions to run a new medical school without a university’s backing, with most education delivered via online classes.

But now, his company, NewMed, has partnered with Federation University in Victoria to realise his dream of a four-year, graduate-entry doctor of medicine program.
