Unjust? Respected UK anaesthetist suspended for using wife’s free travel card

Dr James Ip, a paediatric cardiac anaesthetist, used his wife’s free travel card

A doctor has been suspended for six months for using his wife’s free public transport card, with a tribunal declaring he is not fit to practise.

Dr James Ip’s troubles began when he was stopped by a ticket inspector in early 2022 as he used his wife’s travel pass, which allowed her to travel on public transport for free.

A paediatric cardiac anaesthetist at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, he later admitted to using the card 55 times since December 2021 to travel to his NHS and private hospital jobs and for non-work trips by the underground.

He was then referred to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service after he pleaded guilty before a magistrates court to entering a compulsory ticket area without a valid ticket; paying the $915 (£500) fine and $554 (£297) compensation.
