The move to counter waning vaccine efficacy has been criticised because much of the world’s population is yet to receive a first dose

US plans to offer COVID-19 vaccine booster doses to adults have come under fire amid concern the Delta variant is set to ravage developing countries with low rates of inoculation.

Overnight, the US Government announced that from 20 September people fully vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines will be eligible for a third dose eight months after their second shot.

The booster rollout will initially focus on healthcare workers, older adults and aged care residents, who were among the first to be vaccinated in late 2020 and early 2021.

Several countries â€” including Israel, Germany and France â€” have already begun administering boosters, but these have been restricted to elderly and immunocompromised patients only.
