U-turn: Govt reviews ban on rebates for ‘quackery’

The ban on private health funds offering rebates for ‘quackery’ could soon be overturned, with the Federal Government announcing a review less than a week after introducing the policy.
Under new rules brought in last Monday, health insurance companies are no longer allowed to offer so-called natural therapies to their members.
The restriction affects 20 therapies, including Pilates, reflexology yoga, rolfing, shiatsu, Buteyko and Feldenkrais (see below for the Australian Doctor guide).
Part of a package intended to drive down premiums, the policy follows a 2015 report by then-Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Baggoley that found there was no clear evidence supporting the use of any of the therapies.
