Vaginal laser ‘no better than sham therapy’

So-called vaginal rejuvenation using laser therapy is no better than sham treatment for reducing postmenopausal genitourinary symptoms, a landmark study shows.
Researchers from UNSW Sydney have compared fractional CO2 laser to a sham treatment in the largest and longest randomised trial to date, involving 78 women (mean age 57) with postmenopausal vaginal symptoms.
They received three treatments one month apart for symptoms including vaginal dryness, burning and itching, dyspareunia and dysuria.
Those in the sham treatment group were exposed to the minimal energy settings, which had no tissue effect.
