Victorian VAD deaths rise 30% in a year

The number of Victorians ending their lives through voluntary assisted dying has increased by a third over the last year, new figures reveal.
Some 401 people died through the scheme between July 2021 and June 2022, up from 310 over the previous 12 months.
A voluntary assisted dying (VAD) review board report published on Tuesday said the rise in numbers since the legislation introduced in 2019 showed that the scheme was “a success”.
The board, chaired by lawyer Julian Gardner, said there had been four cases where individuals had been “technically non-compliant” with the law.
