Adults with asthma who also have vitamin D deficiency may achieve better asthma control when they take supplements, a Spanish study suggests.

The trial included 112 adults with asthma and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 levels below 74.9nmol/L who were randomised to receive either oral supplements with 16,000 IU of calcifediol (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) per week or a placebo in addition to usual asthma treatment.

The primary endpoint was scores on the asthma control test (ACT), which range from as low as 5 points for low control to as high as 25 points for excellent control.

At baseline, mean ACT scores were 17.71 in the intervention group and 19.02 in the control group.
