WA Govt to let pharmacists diagnose asthma and 16 other medical conditions

Aside from asthma, the conditions follow Queensland's program of independent pharmacist prescribing.

Pharmacists with 12 months’ additional training will be able to diagnose and prescribe S4 medicines for asthma and 16 other conditions from late 2026, the WA Government says.

The government announced its intention to expand pharmacist prescribing in 2024, but details had remained scarce until last week.

WA Health Minister Meredith Hammat has now revealed the full list of conditions for which pharmacists will be authorised to diagnose and prescribe.

It largely mirrors the list in Queensland — the first jurisdiction to radically expand pharmacist prescribing — except the Sunshine State only allows pharmacists to prescribe S4 medicines for asthma as part of a collaboration with a GP.
