GPs are being urged to consider cancer when patients present with local pain and swelling in their distal extremities, following a US report of renal cancer that spread to a patient’s foot.

Doctors from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centre have published the 70-year-old man’s case to raise awareness of acrometastases among GPs and orthopaedic surgeons.

The man was diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) of the right kidney after presenting to a gastroenterologist in May 2018.

He had been suffering from abdominal pain, weight loss and fatigue over several months.
