Watchdog closes review of workers’ comp group accused of ‘doctor-shopping’
A multi-year saga involving a major workers’ compensation organisation and allegations of “doctor-shopping” appears over after the Commonwealth Ombudsman handed down an approving report.
Comcare — which manages compensation for federal public servants, Optus, ANZ, Qantas and more — had been accused of subjecting claimants to exhaustive reassessments or referring them to specific health professionals who would provide unfavourable reports.
While a 2022 investigation by the ombudsman found no evidence of illegal behaviour, it warned Comcare that it had serious transparency failures, which could mean dodgy practices might go undetected or unaudited.
Like other compensation bodies, Comcare can order claimants to undergo independent medical examinations (IMEs) from specific practitioners.
