A hospital has apologised to the families of hundreds of children amid concerns they received substandard clinical care during audiological testing or cochlear implant programming.

In April two clinicians were stood down and a clinical review ordered into audiological testing delivered to 400 babies and children at Townsville University Hospital.

The review, requested by the Townsville Hospital and Health Service, was into concerns the testing and cochlear implant programming “may not have met appropriate clinical standards”.

Two groups of children were affected including 341 infants who had undergone follow-up audiological testing after newborn screening from January 2020.
