What are ‘manels’ and why are doctors railing against them?

Australian-Canadian research shows all male panels are still too common at medical events

Growing despair among doctors at all-male panels at medical conferences — dubbed ‘manels’ — has sparked a social media rebellion.

This week Australian and Canadian research laid bare the extent of the ‘manel’ problem, confirming male panels and speakers dominated at conferences in Australia and around the world.

Researchers from the Universities of Melbourne and Toronto analysed the programs of 98 conferences across 20 medical specialties that took place between March 2017 and November 2018.

They found nearly 37% of the 5409 panels held during the conferences occurring in Australasia, Europe, Canada, the UK and US were all-male.
