GPs are often targeted for so-called low-value care, but researchers sometimes highlight the issue that politicians won’t — low-value care in hospitals.

In the latest issue of BMJ Quality & Safety, Australian researchers count the top 27 low-value procedures performed in NSW public hospitals in 2016/17.

Their definitions are based on Choosing Wisely-style campaigns across the US, Canada and the UK.

They found that between $49 million and $99 million was wasted on the procedures over the 12 months, depending on what was counted as low-value care.
