Which patients need anticoagulation after COVID-19 hospitalisation?

Patients hospitalised with COVID-19 who have three risk factors for venous thromboembolic events would benefit from extended thromboprophylaxis on discharge, say US doctors.
The US researchers found that VTE events after discharge occurred more often in those with a history of VTE, with high levels of peak D-dimer and high pre-discharge levels of C-reactive protein.
The findings come from an analysis of coronavirus patients at Detroit’s Henry Ford Health System, US. They had a mean age of 63 years and 48% were men.
Overall, 36 patients (1.3%) had VTE events after leaving the hospital — 16 pulmonary embolisms, 18 deep vein thromboses and two portal vein thromboses.
