Who are the most burnt out: Millennial, Gen X or Boomer doctors?

GPs rank highly for burnout, with nearly half feeling this way, US survey shows

Mid-career and juggling family and work roles, Gen X doctors report feeling more burnt out than their Baby Boomer and Millennial colleagues, a large US survey shows.

The latest Medscape report on burnout and suicide shows 48% of doctors from Generation X (aged 40-54) say they are burnt out, compared with 39% of Baby Boomers (55-73) and 38% of Millennials (25-39).

GPs continue to rank highly for burnout, coming in at equal-fourth spot in the annual Medscape survey of 15,000 doctors across 29 specialities.

Dr Carol Bernstein, vice chair for faculty development at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, says mid-career is typically a peak time for burnout, which is where Gen X doctors are in their life trajectories.
