Why are GPs spending thousands of dollars on air purifiers?

GPs are spending thousands of dollars on air purifiers in the hope they will give staff and patients an extra layer of protection against COVID-19.

Geelong practice owner Dr Bernard Shiu is one of them.

He has purchased eight high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters â€” one for each of his six consulting rooms, along with the staff room and reception.

The machines, which he says are known as the most reliable type of purifier, have a fan and layered filter that work by pulling in the air and trapping particulate matter that make up respiratory aerosols, pollen and smoke.
