GPs are spending thousands of dollars on air purifiers in the hope they will give staff and patients an extra layer of protection against COVID-19.
Geelong practice owner Dr Bernard Shiu is one of them.
He has purchased eight high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters — one for each of his six consulting rooms, along with the staff room and reception.
The machines, which he says are known as the most reliable type of purifier, have a fan and layered filter that work by pulling in the air and trapping particulate matter that make up respiratory aerosols, pollen and smoke.
