‘Why did it disappear?’ JEV outbreak still shrouded in mystery as expert warns it could return

In June 2023, Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly declared the end of a national emergency response for an unpredictable and deadly viral disease.

You may be wondering if this was related to COVID-19, but would be mistaken — the end of the coronavirus emergency would not be declared for another four months.

Professor Kelly’s announcement was about the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) outbreak that began in March 2022.

Across the temperate inland areas of NSW, Victoria and SA, a total of 45 confirmed JEV cases were recorded, including seven deaths.
