Why fasting during Ramadan is safe for most patients with diabetes

Most patients with diabetes should be able to fast safely during Ramadan, says an endocrinologist leading a novel Ramadan preparation clinic.

The clinic, managed by the Logan Endocrinology and Diabetes Service in Queensland, accepts referrals from GPs for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes for advice and monitoring during Ramadan.

Its clinical director, Dr Gaurav Puri, said patients had traditionally been warned against fasting because of the risk of glycaemic excursions.

“But we are hoping to wrap the treatment around the lifestyle of the patient, not the other way around.”
