Professor Richard Schilling is one of the UK’s top cardiologists but over the last month he has been working shifts as a nurse assistant in his hospital’s ICU.

His decision was prompted by the country’s second wave of COVID-19 cases threatening to swamp its health system.

Below he tells Australian Doctor what it has been like (“truly exhausting”), what he has learnt and why he has been heartened by the way hospital staff have come together in a time of crisis.
