The UK doctors’ union has retracted its opposition to a high-profile review on gender care services conducted by paediatrician Dr Hilary Cass, following its own investigation.
The British Medical Association (BMA) was the only major UK medical group not to endorse the 2024 report, which found weak evidence for puberty blocker prescribing, hormone therapy or psychosocial interventions in teens with gender incongruence.
Instead, the BMA council swiftly voted to conduct its own “transparent, evidence-led” review.
The BMA said it was concerned by the policy response to the Cass Review, especially England’s ban on puberty blocker prescribing for under-18s.
