A GP in the UK has accused his peers of harming patients through ‘weight stigma’, saying obesity does not cause chronic health conditions.

“Weight inclusive” GP Dr Asher Larmie, who prefers the word “fat”, argues that patients have been harmed due to doctors’ weight loss advice.

“Being fat simply means you carry more adipose tissue on you,” he told his 15,000 Twitter followers earlier this year.

In February, Dr Larmie wrote that weight loss could be harmful because it put the body and brain under “a significant amount of chronic stress”, which increased the risk of “multiple serious medical conditions”.
