Why this GP is quitting corporate cannabis prescribing: ‘Boundaries between medicinal and recreational use are blurring’

Dr Laurence Kemp was also worried about being 'typecast' as a cannabis doctor.

A GP who quit his senior role at a cannabis corporate six weeks ago is worried for the industry’s direction, especially the blurred lines between patients and recreational users.

Dr Laurence Kemp became interested in cannabis prescribing “largely by accident” after moving from the UK to Brisbane in 2018.

Patients were increasingly asking about medicinal cannabis, and after initially referring them on and seeing significant improvements, Dr Kemp decided it was something he wanted to explore further.

As his interest grew, in 2021, Australian cannabis producer and importer Medcan launched “a clinical division” called Cann I Help, with Dr Kemp joining as head of medical.
