Widow of hospital’s medical director says work pressures killed her husband

The wife of a leading doctor who suffered a fatal MI has lost her bid for compensation after she claimed his death was the result of relentless workplace stress.
The director of medicine at Tasmania’s Launceston General Hospital, Dr Alasdair MacDonald, collapsed on Christmas Day in 2023.
According to his wife’s lawyers, he had been subject to relentless stress and pressure, managing the largest medical department in Tasmania.
“He invariably worked seven days a week and was on call 24 hours a day. He had requested for over 10 years a deputy and extra staff which was never forthcoming,” they told the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
