Woman gives birth to another patient’s baby following embryo mix-up

The mistake was detected when the parents wanted to transfer their remaining embryos elsewhere, Monash IVF says.

IVF regulation is in the spotlight after a mix-up led to a woman giving birth to a baby not related to her, with little chance the genetic parents can claim custody.

Fertility clinic Monash IVF revealed that “human error” had resulted in another patient’s embryo being thawed and incorrectly transferred to the woman at a Brisbane facility.

The mistake was picked up in February after the birth parents had asked for their remaining embryos to be transferred elsewhere and an extra embryo was found in storage.

No details have been made public about the families involved or the age of the child.
