Women and older patients missing out on optimal post-stroke care: MJA study

Women, over-80s and patients with dementia are more likely to miss out on risk factor assessment after stroke or TIA, an Australian study has found.
Of all patients with prior stroke, only half received serum lipids or urinary protein assessments despite being indicated, according to the retrospective study of 3376 patients at 383 Victorian GP practices.
Co-author Professor Mark Nelson, head of general practice at the University of Tasmania, said the study highlighted areas of post-stroke care requiring extra attention.
The Monash University–led team looked at whether cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed and preventive medication prescribed, and whether patients reached target values for risk factor measurements.
