Two women in WA face charges of planning to commit female genital mutilation on a baby after a doctor allegedly refused to carry out the procedure.

The women, aged 23 and 50, allegedly approached a doctor in January to conduct a female circumcision on the two-week-old infant as part of their cultural beliefs.

WA Police say the doctor refused to perform the procedure and the women were investigated by child-abuse squad detectives.

They have each been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and will face Armadale Magistrates Court on Friday.
