Workforce crisis? Another 11,000 GPs need to be found in the next 10 years, new report warns

The GP workforce crisis will be 10 times worse by 2031 based on the failure to fill training places and an exodus of GPs either retiring or finding new careers, a new report warns.
There are roughly 34,500 specialist GPs registered in Australia, but the AMA says that is already 860 full-time equivalent (FTE) GPs fewer than needed to keep up with existing patient demand.
If the nation’s health needs continue to skyrocket, around 50,000 FTE GPs will be needed by 2031, according to its report — The General Practitioner workforce: Why the neglect must end.
Its “conservative estimate”, which assumes an ongoing failure to fill GP training places, is that Australia will therefore end up 10,600 FTE GPs short.
