Workforce crisis forces Dr Jafrin Mannan to close GP practice that was her ‘baby’

Dr Jafrin Mannan says the recruitment crisis squeezed her practice from two sides.
Dr Jafrin Mannan.

Dr Jafrin Mannan opened her GP practice a few kilometres north of Newcastle in 2019, where at its peak it cared for almost 2000 patients.

But the struggle to recruit doctors forced her to shut the doors this month and move to a new practice, even though the new practice was just a 15-minute drive away.

She said her old practice had been squeezed from two sides.

It was located in Fern Bay, part of the Port Stephens local government area, but deemed part of metropolitan Newcastle under the Modified Monash Model, so could not recruit IMGs as a Distribution Priority Area.
