By age 10, Dr Mallee Lambert could drive a boat.
Growing up in Lovett Bay, a Sydney suburb inaccessible by road, every journey involved travelling across water — a beautiful but unique upbringing, he says.
It has helped him understand some of the struggles faced by remote communities such as Nhulunbuy, an old NT mining town, where he is now a rural generalist registrar.
“Where I grew up, you had to handle 2L of milk and a loaf of bread eight or nine times before it went in the fridge, because you had to take a boat, then another boat, then walk up a big hill just to get home,” he tells AusDoc.
