Young GP siblings buck the practice closure trend by launching a clinic together

While multiple Tasmanian practices have closed, Dr Emma Shoemaker and Dr Jay Shoemaker think their approach will succeed.

With abundant news stories about long-running practices closing, a young sibling GP duo in Tasmania are determined to fight back.

Dr Emma Shoemaker and her older brother Dr Jay Shoemaker have opened a long-dreamt-of family practice in Hobart, with the first patients walking through the doors at 8am on Monday this week.

“It’s been a long-term goal that goes back years, when we were in the beginning of med school, if not earlier,” Jay tells AusDoc.

“It’s something we’ve always talked about doing together.”
