The RACGP is warning GPs to be wary of serious medicolegal risks if they end up managing patients caught up in the Queensland pharmacist diagnosing and prescribing pilot for uncomplicated UTIs that allows them to issue certain antibiotic scripts.

And with very good reason. 

I am reminded of the situation many years ago, when independent mid-wives sought to be included in private obstetrics and be indemnified for negligence claims under a nominated obstetrician’s professional indemnity (PI) insurance policy. 

The MDOs had no issue with the expanded structure of antenatal care and the confinement and inclusion of independent midwives, but they declined to indemnify their obstetric members for incidents that reflected directly on the midwives’ management of the team’s patients.
