An overdose of the ‘American dream’: Australia’s sledgehammer approach to pain management

It was almost a decade ago and I had recently arrived in Australia and was focusing on learning the ropes of a new healthcare system.

While diligently plugging away, the work phone rang. It was my wife – our three-year-old son had fallen from his tricycle and hurt his arm.

She was taking him to the hospital and tried to reassure me that he was being brave and was coping okay after an initial cry.

I raced over to the emergency department and found my son on a bed in a delirious state with his eyes rolling around not knowing who I was.
