‘A troubled and eccentric GP with a profound vision’: The story that has stayed with me for over 50 years

There are many books that have influenced my life, starting with the Famous Five series and then the New English Bible.
But during my time at medical school, back in the England of the late 1960s, the one that was read by most of my classmates was A Fortunate Man.
Written by Marxist art critic John Berger, it is a deep meditation on the life of an English GP named John Sassall.
The book attempts to address two questions: What is the value of medicine to society, and what is the value of a doctor?
