A win for patients or medicalising ‘normal’? Why I’m uneasy about GPs diagnosing ADHD

Dr Rod Watson

The recent announcement that NSW GPs will be allowed to diagnose and treat ADHD raises concerns for this old silver fox.

Over the past few decades, I have witnessed all fields of medicine increasing their range of influence, by stepping across the previously recognised boundaries delineating the ‘normal’.

The resulting medical overdiagnosis is multifaceted, and obviously with big pharma in the mix.

The narrowing of the normal range is particularly evident in the areas of psychiatry and psychology.
