Access to continuous glucose monitors remains a lottery. Why won’t the government do something?

A 2024 parliamentary inquiry made 23 recommendations to improve prevention and management of diabetes. When the Federal Government finally responded to it, in March 2026, it only offered in-principle support for nine recommendations.

Here, three diabetes experts warn that the government’s failure on these recommendations, especially the call to remove restrictions on subsidised access to continuous glucose monitors, is putting patients at risk.

It’s been two years since the report on the government’s State of Diabetes Mellitus in Australia in 2024 inquiry was released.

At the time, the 23 recommendations in the report were described as a comprehensive reform package.
