ADHD has become ‘it girl’ of mental health, the cool kid of diagnoses, the disorder everyone seems to want

Dr Rachel Glasson.

“Everyone’s got ADHD these days.”

ADHD is a diagnosis that is indisputably on the rise. It’s the ‘It Girl’ of the mental health world right now, the cool kid of diagnoses, the one that everyone seems to want to have.

I’ve worked in youth and adolescent mental health for more than a decade, so ADHD and I are well acquainted, although I will confess to having been more than happy to leave it to the paediatricians and psychiatrists in past years.

Until maybe 2021, it was something I mostly read about in specialist letters or recorded as a current condition for some of the young people I saw in that role but rarely anything more.
