In an unusual move, three academics sent a draft version of their opinion article for leading science journal Nature to their peers asking them to sign it off if they agreed with their conclusion.

Within 24 hours, they collected 250 signatures. Within a week, 800. Every continent aside from Antarctica was represented.

One supporter called their article “an opportunity to register your voice in favour of better scientific practices”.

So what was the commentary that inspired such enthusiastic support?
