As a young doctor I was eager to prescribe — now I feel a pull in the other direction

In the latter years of my practice, I have become more aware of the benefits of deprescribing.

The vast array of medication side effects I was seeing when working with my patients started to strongly affect my therapeutic attitude.

I sensed a need for a finer balance between prescribing and deprescribing that I had not fully appreciated as a younger GP.

Against the influence of a primarily pharmaceutical approach in traditional general practice treatments, I began to push back and to appreciate when less can often be more.
