‘With a beating heart, I plunged the needle deep into the ventricle’

I stared at the exposed and throbbing heart before me. Blood red. Left ventricle right there before my eyes.
In my hand was a hypodermic. It was my job to plunge the needle deep into the heart.
I am not cut out for this stuff. I am a GP, not a cardiothoracic surgeon. Not an intensivist. Amoxicillin is my strong suit.
But what could I do? She was my patient. She had always trusted me. I knew what had to be done, and there was no time to hesitate.
