Being hauled before the PSR is bad — but there are other watchdogs with a nastier bite

In the Sydney Morning Herald of 5 November last year, reporter Adele Ferguson referred darkly to “strong links” between the Professional Services Review and the AMA.

These links, she said, gave the Medicare watchdog “the appearance of a body that lacks true independence”.

GPs are aware (and wary) of the PSR.

GPs know the 80/20 rule: a doctor who sees 80 or more patients on 20 or more days in any year is deemed to have engaged in “inappropriate practice” and will therefore be brought before the PSR for assessment.
