We live in dread of the diagnosis but dementia transforms families — not always tragically

I have been reflecting on the role of GPs in the lives of patients with dementia.

It’s partly the result of awarding Australia Day honours to Professor Henry Brodaty, recognising his lifetime work with dementia research.

In my experience, the annual health check for the over-75s often reveals the dementia diagnosis.

A falling cognitive score, history-taking (with a family member present), examination, and appropriate imaging and blood tests are usually enough to arrive at a working diagnosis.
