Doctors live with doubt, it’s how you manage it that matters

One of the charms and challenges of medicine is that it is a profession that must live with uncertainty. 

Doubt is intrinsic to our work. We can have absolute certainty about not that much. What was clinically correct in 2002 may be nonsense by 2022.  

A viral URTI may be a viral URTI, but a vaguely unwell child can harbour anything from a transient minor illness to a life-threatening infection.  

Our challenge is to straddle the gap of uncertainty, to use the planks of experience, training
