Free lunches … a simple way to combat doctor burnout?

I’ve been working in a New Zealand hospital these last few months, and it’s very different.

It’s not the accents, or that their favourite ACE inhibitor is cilazapril. It’s the daily free lunch. It makes my day at least 14% better.

It’s not a super gourmet affair, but it’s a hot meal of mostly real food prepared daily — meat and veg, fruit, soup, salads, and even vegan options.

It’s leaps and bounds ahead of the scrounged meals I organised for myself in my junior years in Australia. Vegemite sachets eaten with a spoon, and on a good day a plastic cheese sandwich nicked from the ED fridge.
